Industry: five checks before you sign a foreign worker

Industrial employers rarely hire one person. They hire a shift - which means every error in the process is multiplied by the size of the group.

The five checks

• Identity and document validity. Passports expiring inside the contract period are the most common single delay.
• Qualification match. The certificate must cover the exact process, not a related one.
• Medical fitness for the workplace, not in general.
• Accommodation capacity confirmed for the full group, not the first arrivals.
• A written contract in a language the worker actually reads.
